Questions for Land Rover: Keep them coming in

Yesterday I invited people to email me questions which I would put to Land Rover on this blog. I have been inundated by them... thanks to all....so will spend today collating and summarising.

Hopefully I will post them tomorrow... I am at a client all day today so won't be around....

I still haven't heard from Land Rover.

We have a Freelander 2005 that has shown some trouble accelerating - dangerously so -as it nearly stalled out on simple hills while in autmotic drive and trafffic nearby.

Even WORSE is the LR3 2005 V8 that we have had for one wek for evaluation as a replacement for the Freelander. We will need to return this LR3 to the dealer to see if a 2006 LR3 is any better. Why spend $50,000 for a car that can't drive up a simple hill every day?

After repeated trials, the 2005 v8 LR3 cannot handle our paved hill in 2nd gear (10% to 15% grade). As its speed slows to about 15mph, it enters a nearly stall condition while in 2nd manual gear (2000 rpm roughly) and actually stops as gravity asserts itself. Revving in 1st gear to 4000 rpm is not a solution. (Our Range Rover 2005 and Freelander can handle this hill easily at speeds from 10-20mph in 2nd gear with no problem, by the way.) Why can't the LR3? Furthermore the LR3 vehicle was tested in automatic drive and nearly stalled out on a gentle hill. In no situation was the vehicle carrying anything more than 2 people. The evaluation LR3 we have has basrely 150 miles on it. What is the problem here?!

P.S. We have a Range Rover 2005 - excellent vehicle, no significant complaints at 7,000 miles on its clock.

Is it normal for the rear brakes pads to be worn out as early as 13k miles??? and for the dealership not to cover it?????

The rear break pad question was about the the land rover discovery 2004 SE ....???

Td5 series II W plate 60,000miles family vehicle, never towed, serviced regularly. crank shaft bearing breackdown, new engine fitted. This can't be right. Help

This site has given me the "heeby jeebies". I am considering the purchase of the Discovery 3 with a 2.7D with a toss up between a Landcruiser. I was concerned about the fly by wire caper. Now I'm really worried. I do not have easy access to a Land Rover service center, and intend to use the vehicle for some long distance and out of the way travel. The last thing I need is a glich, miles from any where because an electrical sender some where decides it's unhappy.
Any thoughts?

landrover/swansea stratstone do they care.
bought lr3 tdv6 7 seater jan 05(3rd new car from the same dealership in 10 months)car had faulty paint work on behind d pillar passenger side and on door sill passenger front. garage took back to repaint.
so far
replaced cd/radio - faulty
rectified faulty handbrake warning light
faulty/squeaky rear brakes - 3rd time it was fixed - garage damaged wheel nuts
faulty cigarette lighter
went back to garage spent 4 hours fixing 2nd cd/radio
3rd time in garage to recify squeaky rear door
i believe i have had the worst level of service swansea stratstone ever.
it is a shame but swansea stratstone are giving landrover the help to make their name a worse one in the market place.

i have had audi/mercs/bmw'ss and can say the quality side with landrover is alot less than with those three brands.

Have a 54 discovery 3, love it dearly but put it in for an early service today due to my concern over excessive black smoke? any one else experiened same problem??????????

Garage have reset fuel system but have refered it back to LR, not seen any others doing it maybe it's just me lol

i have recntly experienced a problem with my rear parking sensors. they have now started to intermitently stop working on most occasions and on some not work at all. my discovery 3 is 9.5 months old. has anyone els had a similar problem and is there a known fix.

Parking sensors can be temperamental .. suggest you check out a Discovery 3 forum disco3.co.uk where you'll find lots of feedback

landrovers are shite

i work 4 landrover and they r shite believe me!!!!!

My Disco series II has a few problems, hopefully there's an answer. 1.My handbrake light keeps flashing on and off whilst driving. 2. My abs/hill decent/traction control warning lights remain on while i'm driving. I've had them tested and all are working fine, how do i solve these problems?

I have a break failure problem with an Land Rover Discovery. From time to time the pedal moves easily (without resistence) in, the breaks fail to catch. When the engine is switched off and on
the preassure on the pedal comes
after some time back. Who can advice whats wrong. The master cylinder, the servo and the pads were changed. Thanks

I am on my 4th Disco, last 3 from new. currently running 04 plate landmark. Love LR and not had much bother but just had disco 20K 2 yr serviced at Statstone Landrover and told me that front and rear brakes and front discs shot it.. Bill was ÂŁ780! talk about being shafted..could'nt sit down for 5 days.

Hi
I bought a Discovery 2 from new in 2003. The relaibility record since then has been horrendous - far too much to put into an email. Let's summarise by saying - I'm on my third gearbox, second starter motor, it has failed electronically twice (corrosion), there have been problems with cold air ingress, wiper failure (twice) and much, much more. Today, a warm day, the air con failed. I was looking for advice on this when I discovered this site. Landrover have communicated with me. Paid for a service and offered me ÂŁ500 off a new vehicle. I was discusted with the offer and the non response to my letters and will never buy another LR. This is a pity because I like the car - I tow with it and we live in the country and it suits us very much. Shame about the relaibility. I'm buying an X-Trail next.

Mike

I have had an SE V6 petrol discovery 3 for 13 months. Completed 53,000kl'm with no failures. The most confortable, reliable car I have ever owned

Have had various Land Rovers in many different shapes and sizes.....NOT once have they ever let me down. An excellent brand with a very strong reputation for getting it right.

Dealers are shocking whatever brand you buy, they are all leeches! Have had dire experiences with both Merc and BMW in the past. Reliable, I think NOT!

Sounds like you have had a rough ride with your LR3 situation...either very unlucky or have you been tinkering?

Good luck with the Audi choice...I wish you all the best and I hope the luck of the gods are with you...have you seen the JD Power reviews for Audi??? Good luck.

By the way...Audi Q7...very hairdresser indeed...go RR Sport instead...otherwise, best of luck!

My Landrover is now dead for 85,000 miles. It can not run anymore. The mechanics of Landrover cannot find the problem by diagnostics alone. They have to open the engine to find out but not a guarantee that they will find it. How STUPID this Landrover diagnostics is. Landrover should terminate the Engineer who built this STUPID car diagnostics computer. The service advisor told me that the only thing that can fix my car is to replace the whole engine which will cost me $8,000 plus labor and tax.

1) Engine problem.
Landrover is the worst car ever. My old Hyundai car was much better than Landrover. I drove my Hyundai for almost 100,000 miles.

2) There was a problem with fuel pump and the Landrover mechanics replaced the fuel pump last April 2007 and I paid a good amount of money.

2) Coolant is always almost empty every 3 to 4 days and I have to add coolant every 3 or 4 days. Landrover service advisor said that the mechanics can't find the cause of the issue. My car has been fixed 3 or 4 times for coolant problem and paid a good amount of money for it but still the issue is not fix and I still add coolant every 3 or 4 days. The Landrover car sucks and the Landrover mechanics are IDIOTS. If I am the service manager, I will fire all these STUPID mechanics and replace them with mechanics from Toyota.

3) Brakes.
Every 15,000 miles I need to replace the brakes. Compare to other 4X4 trucks and SUVs which are far more better because you only need to replace the brakes every 30,000 miles or so. The service advisor told me that Landrover engineer made the brakes
soft for good performance. How STUPID that engineer is. This engineer should be terminated and remove his license. He's an IDIOT.

4) Rotor
I have replaced the rotor 3 times for the lifespan of my car (current mileage is 85,000 and the car is now dead). Other trucks and SUVs rotors last 50,000 miles.

5) Tires.
I had replaced the tires of my truck three times. The company installed tires which was Goodyear lasts only 20,000 miles. Other cars and SUV tires last for 40,000 miles.

Overall, I will never buy any Landrover. I should have listen to consumer report that Landrover is not a reliable car and it's NOT built to last.

2005 Freelander... multi problems... replaced brakes and rotors at 18k. $425 set back.... horrible cutomer service and will make excuse before letting any owner use their warranty. dies periodically and has lots of electrical probs! Everyone else with the same problems need to report them as a lemon to bbb. even if we can't get our money back... maybe we can at least make them do a recall for all the other fellow land rover regretters!

HI, I purchased the discovery in march 2006. Previously I owned an Nissan Patrol 4.8L petrol and also own an totoyal prado. When comparing the dico 3 is the best vehicle by far. Have clocked 10,000kms and have not had any problems with disco 3.

My Rover 200 has done 100,000 miles and is still going strong :D

i think al of u arseholes hu r complaining about the disco have got sumut wrong in ur heads.my uncle works at land rover and as a result changes his car every 6 months or so, nearly always he has a disco, and never has he had any kind of problem and he does extensive miles, back and forth from liverpool and birmingham almost every other day.so stop moaning about shit all and be happy with a class car.

I have a land rover discovery es M reg 1995 It run very well. even better than some newer ones I have drove but it seems to be bellowing out black smoke. be verry greatfull for so help. jon

I have taken the Disco 3 into very rough terrain in Africa. A significant problem, however, is the fact that the off-road height automatically resets to normal height when touching 50kms / hr (what is the trigger point in miles for UK spec vehicles?). The problem is that in many instances, off-road terrain simply has a high "middle man" and one can drive 60, 70 or even 80 km/hr. NOT with the dear Discovery 3, you have to stay below 50 kms / hr (and a chime that constantly irritates you due to being above 40kms / hr but below the magic 50kms/hr). Failing which the car simply lowers resulting in much damage underneath as rocks, gravel, sand etc do their thing. And beware lifting the car back up to off road level more than a hand full of times, the system shuts down, citing "over heating". Land Rover in SA have not commented on my problems. My local dealer says - "thats the way the car is, sorrry for u dear Sir". What a pity, it simply renders the car quite useless for fairly simple off road conditions.

Bought our Disco 3 in Sept '05 and it has just gone in to have the parking brake looked at AGAIN! It's been in to LR at least 5 or 6 times for various things including Suspension problems, airbag problems, coolent level sensor problems, parking brake problems and excessive tyre wear after only 15k. I wouldn't mind so much if I didn't like the car but I love it.

Think we might try to get it replaced with another one as this is now getting silly. What do you think our chances might be?

I purchased a new Discovery TDV6 SE a few months back and have already done over 7000kms in it.

It is the most superb vehicle that I have ever owned which included a BMW X5 3l Diesel. The comments from passengers on long trips throughout South Africa have been glowing and in fact one is selling his Volvo to get the Disco.

No problems at all so far except a crunch noise that emitted from the front wheels on full lock. Took it into the dealership the next day and it was fixed in five minutes - a steering part needed a bit of lubrication.

Dealership service from top to bottom have been unbelievable and needs to be commended.

can someone tell me why i have to change brake discs on my 96 dicovery and it shakes and rattles when slowing down from above 50mph the land rover just judders i have now changed the discs 3 times in 12 months

well i just tried land rover for some advise but they say i must go through there dealers for this well land rover i will buy foreign next time you can see why we are going down hill in this country

Had Disco Series 2's for 6 years now some snags all solved to my satisfaction. My thanks to Rocar Moores, Huddersfield, Copley Landrover Halifax, Charles Hursts Belfast. Solid dealership support.
Now have Disco 3 - Awesome Vehicle - so far so good. If the support on this is as good as the series 2 I will be OK.
In contrast to BMW vehicle I had, this was was not only very unreiable, but was supported by arrogant dealer (Bavarian Belfast) who couldnt technically support the thing plus they told lies & tried to sting me for money.
BMW NEVER AGAIN. Absolute CRAP

Can anyone tell me why my traction control light/ABS light/and Hil Descent Control light are on all the time???The other day I braked real hard at a light and they came on and have stayed on...called the dealer and was told it is just a sensor and it is not "really" locked in traction control mode....?Has this happened to anyone else. Appreciate your comments??

Read this! I've owned a Land Rover since 2003. Land Rover of North America ignored my letter...shocking?!? Lora

I have owned a 2003 Land Rover Freelander S since October 17th, 2003 and I can say I fear for my life while operating the vehicle due to the overwhelming hazards associated with the automobile. Your automobile has not only been an inconvenience with the number of times it has broken down but has cost me valuable time and money.

The vehicle has broken down 13 times in the past 18 months.

October 11th, 2006 – This was a truly horrifying experience for me. The engine lost power but the tachometer raced into the red zone. I was traveling about 60 MPH on and interstate. I was pulling over to the right shoulder and suddenly the vehicle regained power and shot off down the shoulder. Imagine if I went down an embankment and died or perhaps I shot into other vehicles? In addition to this, my engine thermometer showed the engine was running hot and steam started rolling out from underneath the hood. Mileage 42,040

TOWED TO LAND ROVER OF SEATTLE – REPLACED HOSE, REPLACED FAULTY WINDOW REGULATOR.

October 26th, 2006 – This was another frightening episode regarding the engine racing out of control. I was driving at about 30 MPH when the car lost power but the engine was racing out of control. The tachometer was almost reaching the red zone. Let me ask, if somehow the engine had engaged again, would I have been so lucky again to keep control of the vehicle? How does the death of your customer or other drivers weigh on your minds Land Rover of North America? Mileage 41,430

The vehicle was towed to the Land Rover dealer. I explained via phone I was frightened to operate the vehicle and reiterated that point when I picked up the vehicle from the service department. I spoke to one of the service representatives and also asked the service Manager to contact me.

TOWED TO LAND ROVER OF SEATTLE – TRACED TO FAULTY THROTTLE BODY. REPLACED THROTTLE BODY.

August 15th, 2006 – The vehicle would not start again today. I cancelled all of my appointments and waited for the tow truck (again). Mileage 40,093

TOWED TO LAND ROVER OF SEATTLE – STARTER FOUND CRANKING TOO SLOW AND SMOKING. TRACED INTERMITTEN FAILURE TO FUSE BOX. REPLACED ENGINE FUSE BOX & STARTER ASSEMBLY.

July 27th, 2006 – Again, the vehicle would not start. Mileage 40,371

TOWED TO LAND ROVER OF SEATTLE – DIAGNOSES TRACED TO FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH. REPLACED IGNITION SWITCH AND RETESTED OPERATION.

May 15th, 2006 – This time the vehicle would only start after the fifth or sixth time. It was towed to the Land Rover dealer. This time it was big news. The original Land Rover engine had broken down so many times, it was time to replace it with a new one. I thought, “Maybe this will be the end of my problems”. Obviously, not….. Mileage 37,525

TOWED TO LAND ROVER OF SEATTLE – INTAKE MANIFOLD REPLACED AND REPLACED THE ENGINE.

February 16th, 2006 – It broke down again. There’s a strange smell coming from the vehicle. Mileage 35,160

TOWED TO LAND ROVER OF SEATTLE – REPLACED GASKETS AND THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY.

January 20th, 2006 – Today the vehicle was overheating again. I’ve still been adding coolant every one to two days. Thank god I didn’t need to have the vehicle towed, that saved me a few hours of lost productivity. Miles 34,206

DROVE THE VEHICLE TO LAND ROVER OF SEATTLE - REPLACED COOLANT BOTTLE CAP. RENEWED UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD. REPLACED BREAK LIGHTS. DROVE THE VEHICLE 134 MILES.

January 18th, 2006 – The vehicle lost power today along with my power steering. It was a frightening experience. I was traveling downhill so was able to pull into a parking lot while I waited for the tow truck. Mileage 34,748

TOWED TO LAND ROVER OF SEATTLE – FOUND THROTTLE BODY TO BE FOULED.

November 25th, 2005 – Now the vehicle overheats at random moments. I’m not sure if the vehicle is safe to drive. There’s also coolant leaking from under the car, not a good sign. Mileage 33,059

DROVE THE VEHICLE TO LAND ROVER OF SEATTLE - LEAKING UPPER RADIATOR HOSES, OVERFLOW BOTTLE LEAKING, BY-PASS HOSE LEAKING.

February 15th, 2005 – The engine doesn’t turn over and all I hear is a clicking sound. Sometimes it starts, sometimes not. It’s frustrating. The break lights come on for no reason also there’s coolant under the car. Mileage 20,807

DROVE THE VEHICLE TO LAND ROVER OF SEATTLE – VEHICLE HAS A FAILED IGNITION SWITCH AND WEAK RELAY. REPLACED FAUTLY SWITCH AND RELAY.

VEHICLE NEEDS A COMPLETE SOFTWARE UPDATE. UPDATED SOFTWARE.

VEHICLE HAS FAULTY BRAKE PEDAL SWITCH. REPLACED BRAKE PEDAL SWITCH.

LEAK IN A COLLANT HOSE. REPAIRED LEAK AND ORERED HOSE.

ENGINE HAS FAUTS. VEHICLE HAS FAUTLY VARIABLE INTAKE ACTUATORS. REPLACED FAULTY MOTORS.

My 2001 land rover discovery se was in an accident, I sworved to miss an animal and lost control. my car caught a support wire for an electric pole and flipped my car from front to back twice then leaving me on the other side of a cross road on my passenger side. The damage is unreal the metal frame is torn up the back sides above the back tires. and the front is gone and the hood is smashed down from the front rollover. My airbags did not go off, my insurance company, the sheriff, the garage, everyone says the bags should have gone off. I have a smashed left hand a broken colar bone head injury black eye and vertical bruises on the left side of my face. I bought the car in April of 2006 preowned and certified 140. inspection. well someone tell what to do Please, this is very wrong and I want ANSWERS who can help me?

We have a 2005 Freelander that only has 22,000 km's.The front brake pads are shot. We have only had the truck for 15 months. Servicing cost $530.00. If we are going to have our brakes fixed every 13,000 miles, this is not acceptable. Our mechanic told us that Landrover is known for brake repairs. Maybe landrover should really think about how they are making their brakes!!!!

I have owned a 2000 Disco 2 for two years. In that time it has been off-the-road (not off-road!) for months. The catalogue of faults is shocking.
IGNITION BARREL FAILURE.
After 38000 miles the ignition barrel failed two weeks before Christmas. I got the part in May!...and they had the cheek to charge full price for the part!!!
GEARBOX
Two main oil seal replacements. The first was replaced under warranty. Just as well as replacement of the part that costs peanuts requires removal of exhaust, draining and removal of transfer box and gearbox and new fluids. Also stripping interior central console and replacement of transmission brake pads spayed with oil. Same fault recurred within four months to be told by dealer that parts replaced under warranty are not warranted!!
ELECTRICS
Bulbs and fuses blow with alarming regularity.
FUEL FILTER
Another pool of fluid on the garage floor last week - diesel dripping on the floor from leaking fuel filter...yet another long wait for a part as LR sent one for a Defender.
...I have just received a recall to replace the ABS sensors. Time to get out the Subaru, Toyota and Mitsubishi catalogues. I owned a Range Rover many years ago and swore then I would never own another Landie. Now I remember why.

I now own a 99 Disco td5 GS and I love it to bits. It hasn't broken down yet even though it has towed an extremely large caravan all over the south of England. I do however expect problems from a vehicle that weighs in at 2280 kg and is abused as much as it is.
The brakes for instance seem to be a topic of discussion on this blog. Please be assured that it isn't only Land Rovers that suffer from "premature pad wear". I also own a Peugeot Expert Van which is used as a taxi and the brakes on that wear out every 15 to 20 thousand miles without fail.I have realised that if you spend a few quid more on decent pads etc then you will get a slightly better return for your money. Also altering your driving technique will help. For instance the Highway Code states that braking should be early and progressive. Which doesn't mean you drive up someones tailpipe and slam your brakes on when they do, it's dangerous for one especially when driving a beast like the disco 3. As to all the other problems, well, I have bought brand new Jap crap in the past and experienced horrendous problems with all sorts of things mechanical and dealer wise. The worst offender was Honda believe it or not. I haven't had one since. I have to say though that Landys ain't what they used to be, in the words of a famous Scottish engineer, "The more they overtake the plumbing the easier it is to stop up the drain!"

Gotta love the web sites where people just collect to complain as if just because THEY have a problem, then all Rovers must be bad. suck it up, people... the vast majority are just fine. solve your problem(s) and accept that stuff happens. sheesh.

2003 land rover discovery. My abs/hill decent/traction control warning lights came on all at the same time. I do believe that I did slide on some ice while on a hill and putting it into park.I do think that it is all related to the traction control. What do i do?

I have a landrover freelander 1999 mod and i some times have my engine cut off 4 no resion dose any boddy have the same problem.pls let me know how you soved it.

Have had the 2006 LR3 for for 10 months, have had nothing but problems guess I am not the only one, have had my dashboard light up like a christmas tree sveral times, every symbol that was there was lit, have had a flood in the car after one night of rain, water was pouring in from the side air bags, the above light and above the sun visors, and the common problem is the car is all over the road, a little pot hole and the car is swirving to the point of not controlling it, has been in for service numerous times and now they want all kinds of money to fix the problem they think it is, the car is not even a year old!

I have had Nissan Patrol's for the past 10 years has a company car and I can say that I have friends that have Land Rover's they are hole's in the road. My Nissan is more reliable, cheaper to fix and run plus the Patrol's are a much better 4WD off road by far besides Toyota. Land Rover has always been $$$ and you spend most of the time fixing them along with Range Rover and the only reason Land Rover is making money is because people spend money fixing them all the time not because they are a good 4WD. In Australia if you drive a Landy you are a outcast and pushed aside, no one likes them, and off road I am always pulling out a Landy with my Patrol, I don't know why but I do. So do your self all a favor and buy a Nissan or a Toyota because they are real 4WD's!

The Australian army and 65% of the worlds armies use Landrovers.I live in Austyralia and I challenge you to match my Discovery off road any time you like.I remember a gentleman telling me how useless landrovers were while waiting for mine at its first service. He had endless clutch /driveline problems. When he drove away I obseved him rev the hell out of the engine then slowly release the clutch and change through the gears until he was in top gear only sixty or seventy metres up the road.Strange how he was having those problems.I would suggest that you all do a search on toyota main bearing problems and the class actions in Australia. Then realise that the owners, dealers and the ill informed all have a part to play.ALL MANUFACTURERS BUILD MONDAY CARS.

thank you one and all. this seems like a very honest website. i am looking to buy a 4x4 . at the moment, i have a mercedes C180 compressor for which i traded in my ford ka last year. its good to know that at least my experience with ford was not an isolated case. in the 4 years of ownership, it gave me no end of hassle and failed its MOT dismally after only 32000 miles. Now, my mercedes is great but I am relocating to a farm so will need a 4x4 and was thinking of buying a landrover. Not anymore, thanks everyone, you have just saved me from years of grief at the hands of Ford again.

How did you go about getting Land rover to replace your vehicle? I want Land Rover to buy back my vehicle, I haven't been able to drive it most of the time I have owned it. Vehicle in question is 2004 Discovery 2 HSE. We have had it for 5 months now (about 8,000 miles). It always takes service at least 2 trips before they figure out the issue, sometimes more. Since we have owned it, they have replaced driver power window regulator, radio/nav unit, front differential, front drive shaft, secondary airpump, and now they state the ticking we hear (which they agreed to fix as part of the sales agreement) is due to damage to a cylinder wall, and the car needs a new engine. The kicker is it has already had a new engine. I think it is insane that a car with 36,000 miles is going to be on it's 3rd engine! They claim th eengine is on back order and it will be at least a month before it comes in. How the hell do I get them to take this piece of crap back for close to what I paid? I am so pissed and my wife refuses to drive it because she doesn't feel safe driving our child around in it. This is the worst automobile experience I have ever had in my life.

Hey Terry Farkas, I know what happened to Your car. The problem is with the turbo. I had the same problem with my Freelander and I had to put it in gear and let go of the clutch to make it stop. What happened was that some part of the turbo broke and it started putting the engine oil inside the cylinders and actually using the engine oil as fuel. I got the turbo replaced by one not made by Land Rover, but by some other company. It was different than the turbo made by land Rover, but it worked in the freelander.

has any body had trouble with the auto handbrake on the discovery 3 as ours rolled down the road into a brick wall. Landrover insist there is nothing wrong with the vehicle even though when you take the key out, the hand brake should automatically come on, which it did not. Where advised to leave it in gear good advise for a 40,000 pound car.

Hello could anyone tell me what the 1997 to 2000 discovery was like diesel iam thinking of buying one is it a wise decision or would i be better with a toyota hilux any help would be great
thanks anthony Australia

My abs/hill decent/traction control warning lights remain on while i'm driving. I pulled out of my drive way the other day, w/ a sharp turn (it had snowed), and the lights came on and now won't go off. Otherwise it appears to drive fine. Concerned that them being on might damage the car. What do i do to reset or get the lights off?

WORD TO THE WISE...
DO NOT, i repeat DO NOT buy LAND ROVER if you're not thinking about reliability. I have a 2001 Discovery and causing me LOTS OF PROBLEMS. Overheating, windows and doors not closing, dashboard lights not functioning (so you basically don't know how fast you're going on a dark interstate), etc.

If only i've known, I could have just settled w/ a Toyota Corolla.

Anyone still thinkin despite all the negative writeups re: LAND ROVER cars, only 1 thing i can say...
"DON'T TELL ME I DIDN'T WARN YOU".

I have a discovery2.The worst car I have ever had.Can someone please tell me is there a reset switch if the air suspension is unbalanced. My land rover will go up in the back and go down at any given time.I need HELP.Please email me back and let me know what I can do to fix this problem, other then getting rid of it.I had if fix a week after I brought it and now a year later it goes down and will not come back up.The ride is bumpee like there is no shock at all on it.I've heard from the dealer no cell phone in the car.Someone should make them have a recall on Land Rover. They had a recall on the brake system now how about for the suspension. Please email me back with something

in march 2005 i visited evans halshaw shirley birmingham to buy a petrol freelander for towing caravan. i requested advice from the salesman if the 1.8cc would be suitable for towing. his response was , no problem,. coming back from cornwall the cylinder head gasket went. i have since read in caravan magazines and also on the internet that the freelander petrol is not suitable for towing. i have been sold a vehicle not fit for purpose. i am still trying to sort this problem out with manager of evans halshaw/stratstone.DO THEY REALLY CARE (LAND ROVER)

I have a 99 Disco series II se7, which i love, but just started having the issue with the hill decent/TC/ABS amber light. About 12 months ago, had replaced all four brake pads and front rotors. Just need to know how to reset the lights. I heard by removing the negative battery line for roughly 30 seconds. Any advise would be welcomed!

I own a 98 LR Discovery. The previous owner and car dealer I purchased it from are scum bags but After putting around $2.5k into the car it's fairly stable and I did a 4k mile cross country trip. The only problem on the trip was brake fluid that started after maybe 3.5k miles due to a loose nut on one of the fluid pipes.
You have to stay on top of problems with this car. It isn't too forgiving if you wait until after problems occur. Change the oil, check your fluid levels EVERY WEEK or every 2-3k miles, whichever comes first.

i have a 2002 landrover and my abs lioghts kepy coming on and staying on it was the wheel bearing needed replacing. Its fine now ...wll it wont START AND I REFUSE TO DRIVE MY BABY IN IT BUT OTHER THAN THAT ITS FINE

i have a Disco2. just bought second hand and done 69,000 km on the clock. The traction control, ABS and downhill lights cannot go off. what might be my problem? LR dealership is far.

I have a DISCO II 2002 and my ABS/TRACTION CONTROL lights stay on all the time. Car seems to drive ok but am worried if it fail and cause an accident and what the usuall cause is. It seems to be common from what I read here. If any knows please email. Thanks

2000 Discovery TD5 ES
abs/hill decent/traction control warning lights came on all at the same time and will not go off.
the vehicle has only done 69,000 km.

Same here. Just bought a 2000 Disco II. The NEXT day ABS, Hill Descent , and Traction Control have all gone off simultaneously. Weird, isn't it? Has whatever is causing this problem been recalled? What does it mean? Can I realistically ignore it?

I have a 01 Disc.II. For sum reason my battery keeps going . dead. Removed alternator, had it checked. Not the problem. ??????

i have a 98 disco and love it, all cars have some problems now and then

For everyone with Disco II's with ABS/TC/HDC lights decorating the dash of your truck like some sort of Christmas display, it is a shuttle valve failure. It used to be that you would have to replace the whole mechanism at a cost of approx $1,200 USD. Now you can buy the single component that actually causes this failure, a much cheaper fix at about $100. You can thank LR for making it available instead of having to buy the whole unit. Your LR mechanic should be able to determine this problem simply by plugging it into the proper computer equipment that every reputable LR mechanic should own. When these lights come on it will not cause your truck to explode, implode or otherwise self destruct, but it will keep these items from working. Therefore, you will not have ABS or TC or HDC while the lights are on so this should be addressed soon after the problem presents itself. You can reset the fault code from the computer and those items will function properly until they decide to come on again, which they ultimately will. However, the only way to fix the issue is to replace the faulty component on the shuttle valve.

Also, for those who hate on LR, you find me one brand/ model specific car gripe website, or any vehicle website that has no complaints or shortcommings and go buy that vehicle. There is no such thing as the perfect car and to compliment that there is definitely no such thing as a perfect mechanic. I firmly believe that cars are only as reliable as the people who are working on them and this holds true for any vehicle.

thank you so much for the details about the ABS light staying on - I have noted all the info. and when I go to my service garage, at least I can seem to know something about what I am talking about - maybe if I look to be knowledged - I will not be ripped off - we can hope - but thanks anyway

I have a '06 Freelander TD4 2.0 HSE. It has done 12 500 km's and the breaks started SCREAMING. It also makes a low noise when breaking down-hill. Surely the break-pads can't be worn out already? It didn't even have it's 1st service yet (only at 20 000 km's).

Any idea what the problem could be?

Sorry, but the three amigos (HDC/ETC/ABS) are not normally the shuttle valve. Just means one of the wheel sensors has reported a duff signal

Unfortunately for D2 or 3 owners you need the dealer to reset them, and tell you which wheel sensor to replace (ÂŁ60)

Plenty of websites out there offering good advice to LR owners (WWW.difflock.com) They are no more unreliable than any other car but their dealers suck (as do most)

Mine is used off-road heavily and has just reached 100k miles, yes its had problems, but nothing non fixable wth some common sense

can anyone tell me which overflow line goes where on a 96 discovery 4.0 liter

i'm changing the steering wheel for a new one i have to remove the air bag ,is there any problems with the code'ing of the key when i diconect the battery any advice would be greatfull

I have a 2001 discovery land rover...very nice to drive when it works..The problem is short drives with stops 3to 4 times then it will not start up it takes 10 to 15 min before it will allow me to start it again, now it actually stalls at a red light at times and will have to wait to start again...Have had spark plugs redone a new temperature thingy done and now getting really choked about it...can any one please help me....email me at lenspud@shaw.ca

Is the Land Rover Discovery II an impractical vehicle? I talked to a formerfacotry worker who told me how high maintenance the vehicle was, and basically called it a piece of crap. Is this true? Has anyone loved their Discovery II?

I just bought a 2001 LR Disco. It looks like the coolest thing on the planet, not the smoothest on the highway. And the front shakes a bit. But I'm going to work out the bugs and give it a HUGE chance. Cuz it LOOKS COOL AS HECK!!!

Hello to all

hi i realy feel so sory for all the poor people who get stuffed buy the large dealers i am a fifty five year old diesel tech and work for a very large dealer and see it from the shop floor i am about to leave shortly, the landrover product is fine its the poor skilled people they have fixing them if you see some of the things i see nobody would leave a bike never mind a rangerover. thanks joe

We have a Land Rover Discovery (2000) . We live on the Big Island of Hawaii . There is no dealership on the island ( our first mistake ) the nearest is on the island of Oahu ( Honolulu ) even though there are quite a few Discoverys on this island . The vehicle has only 75000 on the clock but so much has gone wrong I cannot believe it.
There are two which I believe, if they happened on other marks, would have been recalls of the vehicle - but not with Land Rover.
The first was with the forward drive shaft from the transmission to the front dif.. Fortunately we were not going too fast when there was a loud bang under the vehicle and much clanging. I checked out under the vehicle and found that the shaft had become disconnected just in front of the gear box and was lodged up under the floor somewhere. We got the vehicle back home and examining the problem we found that the double universal joint that is directly at the output of the transmission box had ’burst’ . To cut a long story short the aft universal in that casting has lubrication but the forward universal of that double does not. That unit had bust out of the casting and broken loose, letting the forward shaft ‘fly’ . !! One half of the forward universal was still in tact in its bearing but that bearing was virtually ceased and could hardly be turned .. This, obviously indicating what had happened to its ‘sister’ half which had totally failed and burst the casting that it was housed in, so letting the actual shaft free. I hate to think what would have happened if we had been on an open road doing upward of 55 mph ? Thrown off the road, shaft come through the floor, ….. Tell me someone ?
Of note .. The forward end of the shaft universal has a lubrication nipple as to does the first of the double universal where this one failed … so why no lubrication on the universal that failed ??
I seriously consider that this is a true engineering design fault and whether in warrantee or not is due a recall.
The second serious fault was the failure of the electronic control of the anti lock break system. I have had that on another mark of vehicle and they had a recall out for that fault quickly. But not Land Rover.
Other that that … we have had many failures of small items …. Both front door electric windows have failed … the last one just last week. When examined we found that the main crescent shaped gear which has three spot welds fixes its companion piece to it … all three (simple) welds failed and the part became disconnected. No, there had been no misuse of the windows, how could there be. They have been used as should be but these three weld gave out. ( L.R. do you need to be taught how to make simple welds on your small parts ??? ) The other window now has the same problem showing up????!!!!
The rear differential has a horrible override clunk in it. At 75000 miles?? Sorry; I had an Isuzu Trooper that I finally sold with 250000 miles on it with the original engine and full transmission system still in tact . What’s happening L.R ?
These are only the main problems - we have many more small but annoying other problems. Lets just say that I like the style and general format of the vehicle but we are so disappointed in its reliability and all I can say, having lived in Africa, I would totally distrust taking any Land Rover on safari now .. Or even a few miles away from the nearest dealer/service station - and even then you must have heard of the reputation of many of the L.R. dealerships.

I have a 1999 Discovery IIseries with 125000 miles. I live in Belgium. Honestly I never got any problem with. Only exhaust, tires and batteries replaced. Last week I ordered a Discovery 3 and I hope I will not be disillused.

I have a 2001 discovery and it gives me so much grief since I got it. My advice is DO NOT BUY LANDROVER if you don't like headache.

This is obviously a very emotive web site that I've stumbled on!( I don't pretend to know what a "blog" is!) I am a retired employee of L/R and have been privileged to represent them over many parts of the world for more than 30 years.

I have during this time been involved in many aspects of after sales training, support, off road driving etc. I continue to be an enthusiast of the product (having 4 Range Rover Classics, a 110 Defender and a Discovery 1.)

Whilst I can empathise with the genuine concerns of many of the good people who have taken the trouble to write in, I cannot help but wonder what proportion of them have a hidden agenda. i.e. how many have them are prepared to admit that they are under a lease agreement whereby they have commited themselves to a 3 or more year agreement, found that their financial circumstances have changed and blame the vehicle in order to get out of the situation?

How many of them have tipped a Range Rover end over end (as I did in Algeria at 30 m.p.h. because the authorities dug a 3 metre x 3 metre trench in the road with no warning lights or road markings) at night. Walked away from it, knocked out the roof + other panels and drove it back to the U.K.

I can understand genuine people with genuine concerns airing their unfortunate experiences on this site, however my perception of the British ability to air "our dirty washing in public" has not done British manufacturing any favours. Rover Cars has to all intents and purposes (Chinese taken into account) has gone, now it looks as though as both Jaguar and Land Rover will go the same way - THEY WON'T HAVE MUCH TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THEN WILL THEY!!!

In defence of the ordinary working man ( and I worked my way up through the ranks from Rover 2000, 3500, sd1, Land Rover, production, Service Dept and Overseas Management - so would like to think that I know what I'm talking about ) The vast majority (post the loony '70's) have given their best.

All businesses have to satisfy their shareholders.

I have always loved the Range Rover's and Disco's. However, I bought a disco 2003 and I have had a few minor things happen. Now It is making a loud noise and it is stressing me out. I have put so much money into this car. I am a girl, I do not take it off road. I treat that thing liek a baby since I have always wanted onenow I am a little dissapointed in teh vehicle. I just spent $1100 on new brakes and rotors, those three lights are on, ACE light just came on today. And about three days ago that loud noise started. Does anyone know what that loud noise could be?

I have the same problem as a number of others with the ABS, Hill Desent & Traction control lights coming on. This seems to be a common problem with the disco. I have changed the ABS relay and reset the sensors. the sensors all read 1K ohm which is normal. The light come on at any time even when stationary. If the brake pedal is pushed during self test the light stay on. Any ideas on what to change first?

I have a 2002 Freelander, 62K miles.
I have had several smaller problems in the past, but in the last month it has fallen apart:

Totsl transmission failure - needs replacing.
Two "VIS" valves in engine failed.
Heater/AC fan failed.
Driver window mechanism failed.
Fuel gauge failed.
Left front speaker blown.

Dealer "sympathetic" but will not help (LandRover MetroWest, Sudbury, MA). Puts onus on LR main headquarters to provide assistance.

"Piana", a lightweight office clerk at Landrover headquarters rejected my claim for goodwill assistance after "due consideration"

All services were done, including a major one just 4 weeks ago.

Car is now immobile after towing to dealership - the repairs will cost more than it is worth as a trade-in. At this point, I am considering donating this lemon the car to the dealership after alerting local news sources. I will continue to fight with LandRover head office but have not hopes of success.

I am up to join any class action suit against this awful company. This is absolutely the worst car I have ever owned - the company should be ashamed of its disgraceful attitude towards the unsuspecting public who believe that LR represents quality - quite the reverse is true.

hi,
im about to buy a car this weekend.. i was thinking either an lr3 land rover or a bmw x5.. i read all these bad stories, now im thinking of leasing instead of buying. but my main question is, does land rover lr3 and bmw x5 have the same life span, and the same problems that occur to in the same time distant? or is one better then the other?

I have a '01 disco II with 67k miles. I like the car. First car I ever bought. I continue to get compliments every time I filler up and have no plans of ever selling her, as I so affectionately refer.

I also have a ‘06 Porsche 911 parked next to it in the garage, for which I get a few more compliments.

I believe this illuminates a common misconception of many discouraged souls; that a Land Rover is for all and sundry.

I have devised a simple test; one that benefits both the individual contemplating the purchase of a Land Rover and the poor bastard who has stressfully traversed beyond his means, incisive for answers.

IF AT ANY MOMENT, YOU CAN NOT PULL FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS(or pounds fucking sterling) FROM YOUR WALLET, PROCEED TO LIGHT IT ON FIRE, AND WATCH IT BURN SLOWLY AS YOU CONCLUDE TO PISS ON THE ASHES WITH A SMIRK ON YOUR FACE.

THEN MY FRIEND… YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS OWNING A LAND ROVER.

Cheerio.

ABS, Hill Decent & Traction Control lights came on. Running my Freelander through computer link reveilles:
1.6 Shuttle Valve Switch Failure.

Repair Bill ÂŁ1457 inc. VAT

Best left sitting in the kerb looking good.

Hi all

I have a freeander xi, it's great to drive and the best car i have driven and i have been driving 22 yrs but the TC/HD light comes on, is it the same as the Disco and is a sensor on one of the wheels giving a false signal?

Any Help

Land Rover Defender 130 TD5 255000KM NO PROBLEMS!!!
Land Rover Discovery 2 TD5 180000KM AND STILL THEBEST4X4XFAR!!

Good Luck!!

The Discovery 3 in South Africa has less problems 138 problems per 100 vehicles than the Toyota Hilux 178 problems per 100 vehicles!!! there is some horror stories of other car manufacturers too don't think Land Rover is the one and only!!!

Just had a near death experience in my Disco3. Park brake enabled itself on 5 occassions whilst the car was travelling on the dual carriageway, twice at 70mph. It was like hitting a speed bump at high speed. Just glad it didn't start a roll.
When you now enable the brake when you stop there is much screaching and hissing from the rear end. Then when you try to take it off again the car will not budge.
The service team at Land Rover in Aberdeen claimed never to have heard of this kind of issue. That doesn't sound likely given the information on this site. They asked if I'd like to book the car in for later in the week. I gave them the key, said it was unsafe and walked out. I later called for a update and after much waiting was informed that the car would be staying in overnight. No courtesy car offered.
Looks like the beginning of a lack of confidence in the vehicle.

Terrain Response™
Whatever the surface, Discovery 3 takes it on with confidence and safety. The Terrain Response™ dial, standard on derivatives with Air suspension, gives access to over fifty-nine years of Land Rover 4x4 expertise and state-of-the-art dynamic technology. Cruising on tarmac, driving over grass, gravel or snow, taking on mud & ruts, crossing sand and crawling over rocks, Terrain Response™ is your own off-road driving expert. Simply turn the dial and Discovery 3´s engine, transmission, suspension and Traction settings reconfigure for optimum driveability in all conditions.
Electronic cross-linked Air suspension
Long-travel, all-independent suspension allows extreme wheel articulation, for example, ruts and rocks are conquered with ease. Optional four-corner cross-linked Air suspension provides class-leading car-like ride and handling, both on and off-road, as well as a constant, level ride height, irrespective of the number of passengers or load distribution. Ride height can also be raised by up to 125mm to clear tricky obstacles, or lowered by 50mm for easy access and loading.
The TDV6 engine has been developed to cope with the specific requirements of a Land Rover: strength and durability when operating in dusty environments, on steep inclines and wading through rivers.
Diesel V6
The high-technology 2.7litre V6 Diesel provides smooth Torque distribution, flexibility, quiet refinement and economy thanks to the latest common rail technology (it meets EU4 emissions standards), innovative materials and exceptionally high fuel pressure. Maximum power is 188bhp (140kW) at 4,000rpm with maximum Torque an enormous 440Nm at just 1,900rpm.

Six-speed ZF automatic transmission
Discovery 3 petrol engine derivatives are exclusively fitted with the advanced, six-speed ZF automatic transmission. For the TDV6 models, there is a choice between either the six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. The ZF 6HP26 transmission is one of the most advanced automatic transmissions in the world. As well as offering normal automatic operation, the gearbox offers a ´sport´ mode that alters the timing of gearshifts and throttle response. It also features CommandShift™ giving the driver full manual control of gear changes.

Enlarge Image Intelligent auto or manual transmission
Discovery 3´s advanced 6-speed automatic gearbox features adaptive mapping, giving it an ´intelligent´ capability to adapt itself to your driving approach. Standard with petrol engines, this gearbox also features CommandShift™ which gives the driver full manual control of gear selection when required. A smooth shifting 6-speed manual gearbox is also available with the TDV6 diesel engine.

After scooping two prestigious WHATCAR? Awards in the year of its launch, plus a further award in 2006, Discovery 3 has now been recognised for an astonishing third year. In winning the coveted Best Large 4x4 2007 title, it is clearly acknowledged as the best in its class.

We are delighted to receive this prestigious award once more, which was given following rigorous testing by WHATCAR? We are even more pleased by the multitude of reasons they have given for their selection.

"The Disco isn´t just a 4x4 – it´s also an MPV and an executive car, which is why it´s a winner… again."
In 2006, WHATCAR? noted "Discovery has no equal in this class." We´re happy to say their opinion remains unchanged. Key to Discovery 3 retaining the coveted title of Best Large 4x4 is its exceptional ability in the rough, impressive on-road performance and ability to accommodate seven adults in comfort.

"It´s the Discovery´s breadth of abilities that continue to impress us, and blow its rivals away."
[On road performance]

"We like its relaxed nature, it´s quiet at a cruise."
WHATCAR? were particularly impressed by the Discovery 3´s smooth, refined on-road performance, saying "You´d happily choose the Discovery to transport the most important of VIPs", adding "the ride is sensationally supple and refinement is first-class."

[Off road capability]

"As you´d expect, it´s good off-road."
"More than that," stated WHATCAR? "Is the ease with which you can adjust the car´s suspension and Traction settings to overcome the seemingly impossible." Their admiration of Discovery 3´s acclaimed Terrain Response™ was summed up in two words - "clever stuff."

Discovery 3 wins its 77th Award
As Auto Express 4x4 Off-Roader champion for the second year in a row, Discovery 3 has been accredited for its unmatched ability that sets it apart from every other car in the class. Auto Express recognised, "Whether towing, mountain climbing, family carrying or simply taking the sting out of the daily commute, Land Rover´s Discovery never fails to impress."

"It´s fantastic to see Discovery 3 recognised yet again."
Discovery 3 has beaten all its competition to win the Auto Express 4x4 Off-Roader category as the leader in its class. Advanced 4x4 technology, unrivalled comfort and on-road performance put it streets ahead.

"As well as its on-and-off-road capability, it offers a quality driving environment"
As the AXA Car of the Year 2006, Discovery 3 easily came out on top by scooping almost twice the number of points as its nearest rival, thanks to its 4x4 talents, refined interior and powerful performance.

Spectacular scenery, incredible vehicles
An 18-hour blizzard, frozen rivers, towering dunes of black volcanic sand, windswept glaciers and the Reykjavik rush hour all provided exhilarating challenges for 50 international journalists sampling the Land Rover Discovery 3 on a recent series of ´adventure drives´ in Iceland.

The drives were designed to showcase both the on-road and off-road prowess of the Discovery, but some unseasonably harsh autumn weather really dialled up the challenges for one group. Blue skies, brilliant sunshine and spectacular views of the Icelandic highlands on day one were replaced with driving snow and visibility down to just a few metres on day two. After leaving their remote campsite in the early morning, the convoy didn´t reach the tarmac just 25kms away until 1am the next day.

With journalists attending from the USA, Australia, Japan and across Europe, the events generated enthusiastic coverage and spectacular images in a wide variety of newspapers, motoring magazines and lifestyle titles.

When it comes to technology, the Discovery 3 leads the way. Whether it´s sophisticated cockpit information and entertainment, or advanced driving intelligence, this vehicle is full of cutting edge surprises.
Enlarge Image Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Active Roll Mitigation (ARM)
These two technologies help to maintain Discovery 3´s dynamic balance during cornering. Active Roll Mitigation (ARM) is able to predict when the vehicle may become unstable during an emergency manoeuvre and deploy either the braking system on one or more wheels, or alter the engine management to help regain its poise. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) enhances cornering stability by constantly monitoring key indicators and correcting any tendency to over- or under-steer.

Enlarge Image Terrain Response™
No one knows more about off-road driving than Land Rover, and we´ve built that vast experience into our unique Terrain Response™ system (standard on all 7-seat versions). It makes it easy to drive confidently in Discovery 3 – just turn the dial to the appropriate icon and you´ll have all our driving expertise at your fingertips. Terrain Response™ works whether you´re cruising on tarmac, driving over deep ruts, grass, snow, mud or sand. When you turn the dial, Discovery 3´s engine, transmission, suspension and Traction settings are all reconfigured to deliver the best possible driving experience.

Enlarge Image Satellite navigation with contour mapping
Discovery 3 HSE features our next generation satellite navigation system as standard. Information is displayed via a high-resolution, 7-inch LCD wide-screen display, with just two buttons giving access to every feature. It´s the first satellite system to include off-road navigation, with contour lines and Waymarking to guide you home if you lose your bearings. And because our system is DVD based, data for the whole of Europe can be loaded from a single disc.
