Why am I terrorising Land Rover?

Today my campaign starts in ernest - I have returned from 2 weeks vacation and am energised to get an adequate admission of guilt out of Land Rover.

I thought I would remind you why I am waging this campaign:

I have spent £45k on the highest spec Land Rover Discovery 3 and Land Rover and Stratstone of Mayfair ( the dealer) have failed to keep me happy as a result of 3 main areas:

1) The car's electronics system failed rendering the car useless for three weeks while Land Rover tinkered around haphazardly replacing all sorts of bits and pieces.

2) The car was marketed with certain standard options - one was a bluetooth phone kit and the other was a tow bar - both of which weren't included when delivered - Land Rover won't retro-fit the phone-kit on the first build cars and the Tow Bar cost me a lot of money to fit after delivery.

3) Both Stratstone of Mayfair (the dealership) and Land Rover are totally apathetic when it comes to sorting out my problems. The dealership always blames Land Rover for poor delivery and I am the poor customer stuck in the middle. They don't return phone calls or emails and the only way I get a response is to make a personal visit and kick up a stink in front of customers.

My Demand and the resolution I seek: I want Land Rover to admit publically that my car was a first build F*** Up - I want them to replace it with a new one and (at this stage) I am still prepared to pay in some money for the mileage I have done to date - but they still need to compensate me for the humiliating breakdown; the terrible experience with Land Rover Assist and the overall shoddy, complacent and ineffectual post sales service I have encountered thus far.

So far I have written to the dealership without any response, Land Rover's PR company and the Head of Communication of Land Rover - also without any response - Today I spent £500 on Google Ad Words and Search Engine Optimisation services and hopefully this Blog will start creeping up in the Land Rover Discovery Searches - it already is being referred by Yahoo and Google and is getting 175 hits per day!

Please email this url to as many people as you know who may be owners or potential owners of the Discovery 3 - the truth is it's a great car - it really is - but Land Rover needs to keep their customers happy - I am most unhappy - it's sad that I have to go to these lengths to get some response out of Land Rover.

I am going to post daily on this blog giving you a full account of my struggle so keep returning.

We have had a similar experience except my husband was working for Land Rover and had to resign because he could no longer sell them to other people when we have an unsafe and undriveable car ( where the power steering and power brakes failed at the same time) which has spent 20 of its first 53 days undriveable and in the service centre. All that servicing doesnt include the issue that still remains with the issue mentioned above. Please can u give us some guidance on how to exert pressure as all our efforts, thus far, are falling on deaf ears. We dont want a replacement as we no longer trust them. They tried to blame us when the clutch disintegrated after only 4000kms even though we had brought it in 3 times about the clutch smell only to be told that Land Rover in England had said that this was normal for the manual transmission land rover discovery 3. We cant sell this vehicle and we cant drive this vehicle as who knows when the steering and power brakes will fails again. It is only an intermitent problem . LR admitted their top engineer was drving the manual for the same reason yet now they tell us it didnt happen at all

The culture of Land Rover Australia, apparently endorsed by CEO, Steve Morten, threatens to kill Landrover owners and drive dealers to bankruptcy.
Failing to compensate dealers to properly identify and repair manufacturing faults, causes ‘first aid’ repaired vehicles to be returned to owners who become ‘live crash test dummies’ for faulty Landrovers.
The following example came after Landrover required a dealer to apply its policy to a number of minor faults with a TD6 Range Rover over many months, knowing they would not solve the problem. Subsequently they applied the same policy to a life threatening fault.
Further evidence of the culture - the vehicle was returned with damage, which Landrover had known to have been caused in their care three months previously. They had made no effort to rectify the harm, hoping the customer would not notice or not complain.
When the incidents below nearly caused a fatality (twice), Land Rover Australia’s lawyers described the problem as “two minor faults”.

It was about 9.30pm and quite dark. Light rain settled on the windscreen, At 9Okph the engine suddenly stopped, the lights went out and I searched desperately to come to a safe halt as I exited the high level bridge through a right hand corner I knew was some 50 metres ahead. The interior light came on further impeding vision through the windscreen and my pulse raced in fear. I threw open the driver’s door and peered helplessly outside.

I sat trembling for some minutes in the stationery vehicle. Miraculously, I had hit no-one and hit nothing.

For a second time, I had survived the complete failure of all systems on this new and modern luxury vehicle, 4WD of the Year, the Range Rover TD6.

Only weeks previously, After driving over six hours through pouring rain and darkness the same thing had happened. All the lights had suddenly gone out and the engine stopped. At a little over 80kph on a winding mountain road, I stopped the vehicle inches from the deep gutter on the nearside and damaged nothing except my nerves. I was fortunately traveling uphill.

Extensive driving experience, over 80,000kms per year and over 30 years, and exceptional amounts of luck saved any damage to myself, others and the vehicle in what could have been a fatal incident on either occasion. To most it would have appeared to be ‘driver fatigue’ or ‘failed to negotiate a bend’. Another statistic!

Why was I even driving this car again? I had been assured by the dealer that it was now fixed. It had been shipped back to me after three weeks.

The first time the engine stopped and lights failed, it stopped without warning, I called 24hour assist and it was trucked to a Queensland dealer. The following day, in a borrowed vehicle I called at the dealers. I was advised that they had repaired a fuse and the car now was ready.

I was shown the fuse they had replaced. It was the fuse which controlled the steering wheel adjustment. With some amazement, I questioned that the failure of a fuse to an accessory, could place my life, and possibly lives of others at such risk.

Could the failure of something like the car radio really be life threatening in a $130,000 vehicle???

This was just the first time I had been told the car had been ‘fixed’.

I ultimately refused to take delivery and the vehicle was trucked to the dealer in Sydney. It took almost a week by truck to arrive. I was provided with a hire car and three weeks later the vehicle was returned to Coffs Harbour by truck, a journey which also took almost a week.

I was advised that the vehicle had been tested at night, over about 150kms, and was now fine.

The vehicle mirrors were damaged and the driver’s side interior was covered in grease marks on the white upholstery. The fuse cover in the rear cargo area was lying on the floor but that could have been transport drivers.
I cautiously drove the vehicle some 100kms up the Pacific Highway, had a meal and returned to Coffs Harbour and thence towards home. To experience another total engine and lights failure took me over 24hrs to recover and I was so shaken I had trouble even calling the 24 hour assist phone number. The vehicle would not restart. Only hazard lights and interior lights worked. Interestingly, on the occasion of the second complete failure, the fuse which controls the steering wheel adjustment did not fail but the car still stopped.

Two months later I still shake when I relive the event.

After the second event, I wrote to the CEO of Landrover Australia, Mr Steve Morten, complimenting him on the customer care program and expressing concern and distress at the two, almost fatal incidents, as a result of failures in the new TD6, diesel Range Rover. In a platitudinous response, which I never received by mail, but was faxed after numerous requests, I was advised that Customer Care would further investigate the matter. He then went on leave.

After spending some 45 minutes on the phone with Range Rover Customer Care Manager, Margaret Horesh, during which she finally conceded that I might be less than satisfied that the car was now safe to drive after 2 previous assertions which proved to be false, she agreed to organise additional testing.

A phone call from the Dealer, some 10 minutes later showed the whole conversation to have been a waste of her time and mine. The car had left the dealership the day before.

For the third time, I am advised the vehicle has been repaired. There has been consultation with Range Rover in the UK. It has been tested for 150km at night. (As it was on the previous occasion) It has been returned to Coffs Harbour.

Since delivery I have not driven the car because I am not brave enough to risk my life, or the lives of others, on promises which in the past have proved to be untrue.

The Customer Care Manager, Margaret Horesh in her final words after several phone conversations surmised “You just have to get back in and build up your confidence.”

I have not spoken to one person, outside of Land Rover, who would be prepared to drive the vehicle again They have since refused to let the regional manager drive it to my home.

In the modern era of computer controlled vehicles, especially prestige vehicles, maybe it is time now for the Australian Design Rules to closely examine the extent to which basic safety is compromised without sufficient attention to failsafe systems in the event of computer failure.
It is also time for authorities to examine the contracts with suppliers, under which dealers are required to attend to warranty issues

The CEO of Landrover Australia has refused to speak with me on the phone. I am told he doesn’t talk to customers! It appears he has forgotten who pays his wages!

With 2 new ‘high tech’ vehicles being launched on the unsuspecting public in 2005, by Land Rover Australia, it is time for potential customers and motoring writers to look more closely at the company behind the glossy paint and be more critical in looking at real performance rather than ‘test drive’ performance, not just of the vehicles but also their dealer warranty and servicing.

Even today, five months later, I still shake when I think how lucky I have been.

Well my story about the Land Rover Discovery 04 is not to bag the vehicle but to praise the structure and standard. My Husband and I where involved in a car accident February this year my husband was driving the vehicle lost control and was hurled to the other side of the road unsure of whether we went over a spoon drain then I guess the car rolled twice we landed on the roof, both my self and my husband are okay and we came out of this accident with a few scratches and bruising, and I thank the safety and the strenth of this vechicle because I feel that we may not of been so lucky if this car was not structurally sound.

I am currently having problems with Land Rover as well, I own a 99 Freelander, it just turned 6 and have only done 52,000kms. Few weeks ago the clutch went, so it was towed into Land Rover for repairs. The next day I received a 4 page list of repairs that are required. That came out to AUS$4,000+ parts and $2,500+ labour. So I went on the net to do some research and found that headgasket, clutch which are on the list are a common failure. When the car have done 50,000kms. I have spoke to LR service & warranty and tried pleaing with LR dealership (ULR) where I purchased the car, to come to some compromise. But they were not willing to assist because the age of my car! I was stunned by that comment, so are they saying that they expect all LR vehicles to break down and have some major work done after 6 years?? My car is still at the service centre at the moment until I can decide what to do with it! This experience makes me wish that I have wrapped the car around a lamp post, so I could have made an insurance claim because the depreciation on the car is outrageous. I don't want to re sell it or trade it in, because I don't want anyone else to go through what I had to. And the only person that will get anything out of it is LR, they will continue to make money on the parts they sell you and the viciouse cycle happens over and over again. Buying the Freelander is the biggest financial mistake I have ever made. I am no longer a Land Rover enthusisat, my husband owns a Discovery, we have decided not to purchase another LR unless they show some customer loyalty and commitment.

firstly to Catherine, thats pretty harsh,I can understand the frustration especially with the sums of money involved. You sound like the type of person who'd fire into a crowd because the line was to long.Its good to see you signed of your letter with your personality trait(CUNT). Adrian Im just curious as to why you took delivery of the car when it wasnt what you ordered. In Australia I know of (new) cars that have had 800 or more kms on them and the dealership has been taken to court and lost and sell at a reduced price. I have just ordered a new disco and prior to handing over the money im going to give it a thorough check to make sure i get what im paying for, and its not just Landrover that does this Ive fallen foul once before.

I have just purchased a Discovery 3 TdV6 HSE, after exhaustive testing of Toyota Landcruiser Sahara, Prado Grande, Lexus LX470 and BMW X5. The Disco was head and shoulders above the Toyotas and Lexus, but not surprisingly trailed the BMW. Since purchase I have had the airflow sensor replaced, which had caused a warning on the dash info display, but everything else seems fine. Except, I was loaned a Range Rover Sport TdV6 whilst the sensor was replaced, and despite this being an almost identical vehicle under the skin, it performed much better. I suffer from a bit of turbo lag in the Disco, which was not evident in the RRS. In fact the RRS felt very powerful and quick, not something you'd say about the Disco. I am wondering whether there is anything wrong with my car that is resulting in reduced performance. I think I'll get another Disco TdV6 loan car from Land Rover to compare. Now, apart from this niggle, the car is delightful to drive and I really enjoy taking it on long trips, so fingers crossed I won't suffer as the other boggers here have.

hi ı had the same problemswith tdi new discovery which ı bought march 2005 now ı have problems of a driver seat adjustment and the suspension height that is completely broken.waiting for these parts ı cannot drive because the car looks nearly the same height as ww golf .the service people told me to wait 2 weeks.yesterday ı have decided to change it with range rover ı hope it wont be my biggest mistake again

I was so happy to find this site when I searched for Land Rover. I am a very relaxed, go with the flow person usually but my experience with Land Rover Glen Cove in New York and the 2003 Discovery we leased from them has been a complete nightmare! We had many of the same electrical problems the others owners had (service engine light, parking brake light, etc.) and became so frustrated with this car that my husband and I turned it in early. As far as customer service goes - they just pass you off to another person who never calls back or they blame someone else, meanwhile treating you like everything wrong with the car is your fault! This is crazy!!! I hope you get this site out to everyone looking at Land Rover as a possible car. I already tell everyone I know not to go near a Land Rover.

My land rover experince just ended, thank God. It was a nightmare from start to finish. We experienced many problems with the car, some often repeated. The end of the lease was bizarre, with the dealer (land rover glen cove, n.y) refusing to help us and never returning phone calls. I actually turned the car in early, while still completing my payments because it was making me ill to look at it. Even with that they are charging for something wrong with the door, even though they are the only people to ever touch the vehicle. Through all this they refuse to call me back, to at least expalin it to me. The people at this dealership have no regard for people and are extremely smug. They got me, please do not let them get you. In addition, Land Rover help line is useless as well, saying the dealers are pretty much on their own and you have to reslove it with them. Please do not buy from this dealership..Land Rover Glen Cove, N.Y.

Anyone had this problem ? We are On second Discovery 3 series as first one had so many faults we gave up and were given a new one. Had it for approx 4 months when car is left in Park, engine running, 3 small children STRAPPED in back watching DVD. Go back into house, collect missing school bag, have 2 min chat, then hear a car reversing. Run to back door to see the car reverse itself down the drive into a tree! Luckily everyone OK. 4 weeks later, car repaired. Dealers can find no reason for this to have happened and are suggesting that we have made it up ! Had it back for 5 days. The suspension has gone. Am back in a hire car, AGAIN.

Within the first 30,000 km of its life the water pump, axle seal were replaced. At 85,000 km intermittent rough idling meant that the injector wiring harness had to be replaced. Landrover did not want any part of funding for the wiring harness replacement. Moreover, Landrover took 4 years to get my name and rego correct in their correspondance. Too late pal, no more British junk for me ever again. I'll stick to Aussie cars, they are cheaper and much much much more reliable !

I finally was able to purchase my Disco after many years of yearning. No I'm not rich. Just an average person. The first two issues started before I bought my Rover. I went into both dealer ships here in Phoenix Arizona and was treated like a leper. They were so smug and stuckup, that I went to California to by my vehicle. This should have opened my eyes to how my future was going to unfold with this car. The list of issues are to many to mention from having the breaks done four times before 45k miles, to replacing plugs, wires and so on multiple times way before the recomended 60k tune up to resolve rough idling problems that continue to ale my vehicle, and so on... My Disco still has not hit 60k but did pass the warrantee mark. Dealing with the Local Rover dealers just turns my stomach. Out of all of the cars that I have owned they are in their own catagory when it comes to lack of customer service. The really sad thing is that I'm afraid to go any where off road with this vehicle, to include any long road trips. I never had any second thought that my Land Cruiser would take me to and from. I finally got enough nerve to take my Disco camping over the weekend. It rained off and on over the course of trip on mostly paved forest roads. On my way home my disco started missing really bad again. Once this problem is resolved, and my wallet is empty again from the costly repairs,I will be getting rid of it. I'm not here to bash Rover, but keep in mind the lesson I learned. "Be Careful What You Wish For". Best of luck to Rover and those who own them.

I actually got the impression from Land Rover and their dealers that my case is isolated. I have a defender that started bleeding rust 2 months into it's life along with countless other issues, some major - constantly pouring water onto the accelerator when driving in rain and windscreen wipers failing during heavy rain, some minor - air conditioning failures, dozens of fuses blown and water intrusion from just about everywhere. After 2.5 years and another phone call today I had almost given up. After discovering this site I have renewed enthusiasm to see this through.

To Art - My God, that is my experience of a Defender to a Tee!

Bloody water leaking onto brake pedal etc etc. I had the same faults as you every one of them. I blame my original dealer - Lance Dixon in Ferntree Gully Melbourne, I kid you not it went back over 10 times for the same water leak and each tme it came home worse and dented. Thank God that dumb arsed dealer bit the dust. They wasted many days of my life. The Fender spent 63 days at that dealer - and not ONE fault was fixed in fact they damaged the vehicle many times due to their inability to work on them. The South African service manager told me that it was a peice of crap vehicle built like crap so why should they take care fixing it, that was the last time I went there.... I nearly punched his smug little poncy face in.....

I now take it to MLR in Melourne - and within 1 (one) visit they rectified every defect and fixed some I had not even bothered to raise.

If you are a vicitim of a Lance Dixon type of dealer - Try another dealer. Take it to MLR and give them a chance - They fixed mine.

The water leaks required a 3 week stay in a specialist panel shop - they stripped the vehicle down and rebuilt it we new seals and sealer. Does not leak now. And MLR did this at 105,000 k's so it was after the warranty had ended.

bought dico 3 from Hartwells in oxford and we have had the gear box out twice now as the clutch pedal stuck down to the floor, their appears to be a hydraulic fault of which land rover will not admit to,

I love land Rovers but I detest Land Rover. Can anyone tell me why it is that L/R Defender is the only 4x4 in the world that lets in water from both doors, lets in dust under the doors (because the cheapskates pop-rivet the rubber into loops), has an air conditioner that drips condensation on the floor and doesn’t de-mist? Oh yes, and grab handles for 3-year olds and window winders that snap, plus a cardboard dashboard. I have just rebuilt a Series III pick up and it doesn’t let in water or dust. My new 90 does both of the above. The main difference is that one is 25 years older than the other.

They MUST know, so I have three questions.

1. Do they care, or have ANY respect for their customers?

2. Are they planning ever to do anything about it?

3. Do they ever wonder why they’ve lost market share to boring old Japanese alternatives that don’t leak, don’t have bodies that fall to pieces and have air conditioners that don't drip, under the bonnet and not inside the cab?

It’s the same old British disease. I live in Germany and here the motor manufacturers seem to live by the motto ‘how can we make it best’, while Land Rover seems to be dying by the motto ‘how can we do it cheapest and still get away with it?’

What a shame. We have had an 05 LR3 now for a little more than a year and it has been a year of problems unlike any vehicle to date. It started the day we picked up the car and continues today. The vehicle has had continuing electrical, build quality and computer issues non-stop. Now a leaking roof, gas leak and some sort of transmission/engine issue that resulted in leaking gasoline in our driveway. Customer service is just awful. Unhelpful, uncooperative and unproductive. The car never is done in one day, even for scheduled service. How does a 7500 mile service take 3 days? And not one call to give us an update? I am venting of course. I never thought it could be that bad knowing LR reputation. And it is a shame because I do like the new design and the interior space and seating is fantastic. But alas, what a mechanical nightmare. $55,000. Wow. Toyota here we come...

We have had our Disco 3 for about a year now. And guess how many times it has been in the Service Center? 8 times. And it will be going in today, for the SRS, ABS, TC light coming on while I am in idle at a stop sign. It has leaks from whenever they did the 60K Service, which I brought back the next day, after finding a puddle of fluid, from underneath the DISCO. They tried to explain that when they changed the fluids they had gotten some on the crossmember and that it was still dripping from it. My response was, then your technicians are sloppy. Even though I felt the leak from the TC, then turned around to double check if it was tighten. (I am not an idiot with vehicles).

Here is a funny electrical issue. When trying to adjust the mirrors, once you switch to the right to adjust , the left one moves in. When trying to adjust the left, the right one turns in.

Why is it when you watch all these safari TV shows, you always see a Land Rover out on the Terrain. Taking the assumption you need a reliable vehicle out in the jungle. My wife has had her's for about a year and it can barely survive in the Suburbs.

I can't wait till we trade this vehicle in. And get rid of this supposedly reliable vehicle. Don't get me wrong, when the car is not in the shop it is a nice vehicle. But we barely have a chance to drive the vehicle and good thing I got the warranty, because if this was coming out of my pocket, I would be bankrupt.

I have had the above vehicle for nearly three years. It has been 100% reliable and does 30-34MPG, better than the manufacter's claim. My dealings with Land Rover dealerships, both in the USA and UK have been great (Monterey, CA and Riders of Truro, England). The only problem I had was a blown fuse in the CD player. I have taken the vehicle off-road, it has forded water beyond the 500mm limit and driven over 30,000 miles without missing a beat. It will take 6 people and a dog with no complaints from car or occupants. I love my ninety and would only contemplate replacing it with a 110. I once had a MkIV Golf which had to have the engine replaced after 42 miles. These things happen to all manufacturers - it is not just Land Rover, it does seem that people expect more however. In my experience they are great vehicles and I will happily buy another.

Owner of a Disco 3 since Nov 2004, its has recorded 225 faults since purchase. I was advised by Land Rover in Nov 2005 that all faults had been rectified, not quite the case, they still continue to this day, the latest being a gearbox fault which despite being repaired times still reoccurs. Land Rover refuse to replace the vehicle, so I am left with a 40k pup!

I have a 03 Disco. It has had problems since we drove it off the lot. I told them to buy it back at the Bellevue Dealership but the factory won't cooperate they say. Gave me a corporate number to call, like that will work. Couldn't use lemon law during the first two years of ownership because Landrover Service could not diagnose the electrical faults or tranny shifting problems. Turns out we had water leaking in that messed with the electrical, two body seam repairs, and three windshields later I still have water running down the inside of the windshield. At least it isn't pouring in the seatbelt shoulder strap hole this time.
Weird electrical problems, radio is possessed, comes on full blast when you turn off the rig, rear sunroof was opening a half inch overnight on its own for about two years. They finally replaced the front wiring harness and that seems to have fixed most of the bugs for now. I took it in for the leak and a burned out dash light in the heater and they left four screws on the dash, and the other heater light wasn't working when I picked it up.
I told them I was done. They make walking look like a good option.

I bought a landrover freelander and its done only 99000 kms and its cambelt gave away damage the whole engine Now i have to get a new engine. How f***in garbage is that. Morover the electricals on the dash go on and you have take them to mechanics to reset them what a horrible way to make money after sales I have owned a suzuki cino 91 model a small car but never had to take it to the mechanic except for registration Its time Landrover wakes up make some good cars

I have had the worst luck with LR. I had a new Discovery that completely died on me for no reason. Not only would it not start, but it lost all electricty as well. I mean a totally DEAD car. To top it off, it took Land Rover "Road Size Assistance" 3 hours to come get me and the car. Thankfully I wasn't on a highway in the middle of nowhere. However, since I was in the middle of Los Angeles, one would think they could have made it in less than 3 hours.

The fun didn't stop. I decided to give them another chance by buying the 2006 Sport as opposed to getting the new LR3. I didn't want to risk getting stranded for 3 hours again if my car died. I am a young female and that could be unsafe, as you know. I thought getting a higher version would ensure better quality. SO WRONG! After only 3 months of having my brand-spanken new Sport, it completely died as well. I had to call their stellar "Road Side Assistance" again. Guess what? It took them 3 hours to come get me again! Can you believe that? I told LR to take their service and car and stick it where the sun doesn't shine. This is all in addition to the fact that their service people stole everything in my car from change, to cd's, to my flashlight during the last servicing. They wouldn't give me my money back and spent 3 weeks trying to figure out what the problem was. I had my attorney threaten them with the lemon law. As soon as they got the legal letter they released my car citing a "transmission" problem. It's been 6 months since then and as of tonight...I just dropped my car off AGAIN. This time I was able to start the car (after 5 minutes of repeated attempts) and drive it directly to the lot. It smells like the engine is on fire and every warning light is on. The entire electrical board is lit up. I am SO MAD!!! I knew I couldn't be the only person having these problems. Has anyone else a problem like this with their sport?

I am the proud owner of a 1991 RR Vouge 3.9efi, LPG converted. this is my second RR classic in ten years and it is the best car i have ever driven! i had the pleasure to drive a new TD6 for over 16 weeks and i could not wait to get back into my classic RR, the classic looks better, runs better, cheaper to service, cheaper for parts, less computers to go wrong. so my advice is get rid of ya new cars and go and buy a classic range rover, trouble free motoring. over 600.000km in 10 years. 1 new gearbox, 24 new tyres, 3 light bulbs, 1 new petrol pump, and just oil and genreal servive bits. hears to the next 10yrs trouble free motoring :-)) 1 happy chappie, Mark UK

They're Brtis and the lifelong goal is spending it in a pub, lol. seriously though (and the previous statement isn't far from the truth and even the UK Gov't knows they have that image problem). But anyway, I had a Disco 2 and sold it at 11k becasue I didn't need it anymore, but DAMN I loved that car and the high seating. Not the most state-of-the-art but one of the last SUvs that still look like a thing you can take on a Safari and not a f@!# rounded SUV/minivan. No prblems on mine tho.

I purchased a new 2004 Freelander in February 2004. I have serviced my vehicle at the required intervals with Land Rover. At 48,500 miles, my truck started to overheat. I took it to my local mechanic who looked it over and was puzzled. He couldn't see where the coolant had gone and suggested I bring the car to my local Land Rover dealer in New Rochelle. I had the car towed to Land Rover and the technicians there fixed the so-called ‘problems’. The technicians informed me that a cracked reservoir and a malfunctioning fan were found. 5,000 miles later (now that the warranty had expired) the car begins to overheat. I went ahead and had the thermostat replaced , 2 weeks later it overheated again. I took it the dealership once again. They told me that coolant had leaked into the engine and that I needed a new engine. 6,800 dollars. A 3 year old car needs a new engine?
I’ve been notified by Land Rover North America that they will not compensate any of the money because the car is out of warranty. I also spoke Land Rover New Rochelle and they also said there’s nothing they can do. I was offered an extended warranty which I declined. I would have never imagined an engine would be compromised so early.
This is not the first time this has happened with the Freelander. A business associate of mine leased a 2003 Freelander from Land Rover Paramus and at 48,000 miles the same exact thing happened. There’s an apparent problem with the head gasket with the Freelander.

I am experiencing similar problems of incredibly poor after-sales service from both dealership and manufacturer concerning my Mitsubishi Grandis. The dealership simply isn't interested in my problem and I can't get a response from Mitsubishi head office after 3 weeks, 9 phonecalls and 3 emails. Is this a general malaise among car dealerships and manufacturers?

2003 freelander coolant in engine. looks like a milkshake. at the dealer LR of north America is dening my warrenty 6,600 for a new engine and they wont say why engine has a coolant leak. car was at dealer 1,200 miles before. for engine ticking and they changed the oil. said engine was fine. it suppose to tick.. my butt. If you have a LR sell. Now I have to go threw bbb. I guess lesson 1. read your warrenty book and if they tell you how to dipute dont buy. There are snakes and take your money and dont stand behind there product People can only be pushes so far. I have been push off of the cliff. Sorry for them I always land on my feet. Yes! I have or should I say, I am having those same problems. I own a dis 2004 and already they have to replace the engine! this was discovered after five visits to the servicing department and the replacement of several plugs and electirical things that I am still not sure about. They treat you as if you should be honored to own the piece of junk. The guy was right about one thing, I should have done my research. I am not rich either, but I thought I was making a good investment. The only thing good about owning one of these vehicles is that you get to sell it. Landrove customer service is the worst I have ever dealt with. They could care less about the customer. My dealer was Bill Jacobs in Naperville and the servicing deparment staff is okay until you have a problem, then you become their headache and they treat you as such. They have had my truck going on three weeks and I have not involved lawyers or the BBB but if I don't get a call or an update on my situation, I will be doing both. I am still under warantee but I am dreading the day when it runs out, I still have not been giving the information on the extended warantee despite my several requests. I think the guy is harsh but right, Land Rover is laughing at us all the way to the Bank. It is a no over priced piece of junk and I am sick about the fact that I wasted my good hard earned money on this crap!!!!

Sorted my landrover reliability problems, changed it for a Toyota!

Just adding more confirmation the coolant leakage/engine lock-up is not a rare occurence. In my case at about 58,000 miles. Exact same story -- ticking, dealer "service" with no warning we were driving a time-bomb, etc. Lost theoretical $12,000 or so Blue Book value. If you have ideas on how to spread the word about this so others won't make the mistake of buying a Land Rover, let me know.
