Selling something they don't have: Integrated Bluetooth Phone Kit
I took delivery of the new LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2.7 TDV6 HSE 7 SEAT in November 2004 – one of the first on the road which turned heads. This comes at a price as it’s the first build. I bought it from Stratstone of Mayfair – from a good Salesman – handed over almost £45k One of the really neat toys was supposed to be the integrated Bluetooth Car Kit. The dashboard of the car comes with a phone keypad and the voice activated software has all sorts of nifty commands to control your phone with your voice. Of course I had ordered it and I was somewhat surprised that on delivery Land Rover had installed a Nokia Bluetooth kit in the car. According to the salesman, Land Rover didn’t have the software available for the Bluetooth integrated kit. I bugged them for a while and now I am told that they can’t retro fit the kit which is available in all second build cards. This is nothing short of breach of contract - Misrepresentation - the option (which I elected when Land Rover took the £1,000 deposit from me) was made available to me in all communication and the literature. I am looking for similarly aggrieved purchasers to contact me and we can mount an action on Land Rover – My solicitors have quoted £3k to scare them into action – who wants to split the fee and chase the daylights out of them?
Ah hah now I know what a BLOG is! I read with interest as I've had my Disco 3 for 3 months now. So far so good standfast broken glove box (no spares), steamed up headlamp cluster "this is a known LR fault sir and not covered by the warranty, try turning the lights on to clear it" - no honest I have just paddled up the stream!!! The load space cover suckers have produced bubles in the privacy glass covering. But apart from that it's great and I cover it in lots of mud all the time. I have written the the man and await a reply. I will watch this BLOG with interest.

The PTI/Bluetooth was a "delayed availability" option everywhere. The factory version wasn't built until March '05. The dealer version, with less features, December '04. It you wanted it at time of purchase, you shouldn't have bought it!

Shouldn't have bought the Discovery 3, that is. Things change and shit happens before launch. Specifications subject to change and features can often be delayed. Every one of my BMWs had advertised features that weren't available until half into the year.

Steve, I appreciate what you are saying but its a question of managing my expectations. IF I had been told up front that there were problems with making some of the specs available on first build cars, then I would have been in the position to make the decision you suggest - the problem was that the dealership wasnt told by Land Rover - so how could they manage exepctation. With all due respect, you are suggesting that I become yet another complacent customer - I expect openness and transparency from Land Rover - is this too much to ask?

I took delivery of a Discovery 3 in July 2005, with regular driving all over the country and covered 59k in this period, Regularly serviced (two weeks prior to the fire) at my local Stratstone dealership costing an arm and a leg each time, It was while I was driving towards Wolverhampton that I smelt what seemed like a strong fuel or power steering fluid smell, it must have been one of them, I stopped at some traffic lights and saw smoke coming from under the bonnet, I only had time to get out of the vehicle, call 999 and remove some important items, tools etc from the rear of the vehicle before the fire was out of control, it soon took hold, I am thankful that my grandchildren, family, pets, and luggage were not on board at the time as it would have been a very different story. Three weeks after the event neither Land Rover or Stratstone have bothered to contact me to ask of my welfare or advise me of my next move, the vehicle has been taken away and I have been kept in the dark, no wonder the British car industry is on its knees.
There must be others who have experienced the same fate, as on my travels I have seen other Discovery 3s that have been on fire looking very simular, I await this blog for some comments please could someone give me some help as to what I can do next, I see this as being a defect with the vehicle which should be covered by the manufacturers warranty. What do you think ??
